The organizations , and their Web sites, listed below are ones Harwood Foundation has worked with in the past on issues of sustainable forestry. We recommend that you visit these sites to expand your knowledge about some of the major players promoting forest preservation and the rich level of information their sites provide.
Temperate Forest Foundation
The temperate Forest Foundations purpose is to gather, analyze, and communicate scientifically credible information to the public on social, economic, and ecological issues.
Rain Forest Alliance
An international non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of tropical forests for the benefit of the global community. Its SmartWood Program reduces the negative impacts of commercial forestry by rewarding its seal of approval to responsible forest managers.
Society of American Foresters
The national and educational organization represents the forestry profession in the United States. Its mission is to advance the science, education, technology, and practice of forestry to ensure the continued health and use of forest ecosystems to benefit society.
Scientific Certification Systems
Scientific Certfication Systems (SCS) is an independent scientific organization based in Oakland, California, working for solutions to today's environmental problems. Under its Forest Conservation Program, they certify forest management practices which most successfully sustain timber resources while maintaining the ecological viability of the forest and benefiting the larger community.
World Wildlife Fund
The world Wildlife Fund is dedicated to protecting the world's wildlife and wildlands. With respect to timber, it works to increase the total area of forests under formal protection and to shift the global timber trade to a more ecological sustainable footing.
National Resources Defense Council
NRDC uses law, science, and the support of more than 350,000 members nationwide to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.
Forest Stewardship Council in the USA
An independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization promoting responsible forest management by evaluating and accrediting certifiers, by encouraging the development of national and regional forest management standards, and by providing public education and information about independent, third-party certification as a tool for ensuring that the world's forests are protected for future generations.
Certified Forest Products Council
The Council is an independent, not-for-profit, voluntary initiative committed to promoting responsible forest products buying practices throughout North America in an effort to improve forest management practices worldwide. |
