The Harwood Foundation for Sustainable Forestry
is established to promote and encourage the practice of sustainable development
of forestry resources within a market economy. To accomplish this the Foundation will:
- Promote public discussions and forums to increase public awareness of the need for and benefit of sustainable development
- Develop and distribute educational materials
- Conduct research on existing practices and sustainable practices
- Encourage and promote the management of forest lands, demonstrating the economic benefits of practicing sustainable forestry
- Promote "learning laboratories" for the study of sustainable forestry
- Provide support for community organizations and local leadership through scholarships that promote vital rural economics
The Foundation believes that our society is at a critical juncture. The pressures for economic growth and environmental
responsibility often exert conflicting forces upon our forestry resources. We believe that those whose livelihood depends
on renewable resources have an inherent responsibility to nurture them. The Foundation seeks to cultivate leadership and
foster opportunities to bring about solutions that promote sustainable forests, healthy economies and vital rural communities.
